La Chiesa di San Francesco, edificata alla fine del XIII secolo, è un tesoro storico situato a Comunanza, incorniciato da paesaggi pittoreschi e ricco di fascino antico. Costruita sui resti di un edificio fortificato, la chiesa offre un’esperienza unica nel suo genere.
La struttura, in stile tardo-Romanico, si erge con maestosità, con la parete rivolta a nord-nordest che si affaccia sul fiume. La facciata, testimone di restauri avvenuti nel corso dei secoli, racconta la storia che si cela dietro questo gioiello architettonico.
L’interno della chiesa, con una pianta rettangolare, accoglie i visitatori in una navata unica longitudinale, arricchita da una cantoria del XVIII secolo sul lato sud-sudovest. Le pareti laterali presentano affascinanti altari lignei e in stucco risalenti ai secoli cinquecento e settecento, creando un’atmosfera suggestiva e intrisa di storia.
Il punto focale della Chiesa di San Francesco è l’altare maggiore, forse opera del celebre artista Sebastiano Ghezzi. Dietro di esso, un affresco del XVI secolo ritrae S. Francesco che riceve le stimmate, un tocco di spiritualità che arricchisce l’esperienza di chi visita questo luogo sacro.
La chiesa, inizialmente concepita come convento dei Frati Minori Conventuali nel XVII secolo dal letterato Antonio Caferri, ha una struttura tardo-romanica con portici sul prospetto e sul lato ovest, e un caratteristico campanile a vela. Nonostante il suo originario scopo non sia mai stato realizzato, la Chiesa di San Francesco è diventata un simbolo di storia e devozione.

The Church of St. Francis, built at the end of the thirteenth century, is a historical treasure located in Comunanza, framed by picturesque landscapes and rich in ancient charm. Built on the remains of a fortified building, the church offers a unique experience.
The structure, in late Romanesque style, stands majestically, with the north-northeast-facing wall overlooking the river. The facade, witness to restorations over the centuries, tells the story behind this architectural gem.
Inside the church, with a rectangular plan, visitors are welcomed into a single longitudinal nave, enriched by an eighteenth-century choir on the southwest side. The side walls feature fascinating wooden and stucco altars dating back to the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, creating a suggestive atmosphere steeped in history.
The focal point of the Church of St. Francis is the main altar, possibly the work of the renowned artist Sebastiano Ghezzi. Behind it, a sixteenth-century fresco depicts St. Francis receiving the stigmata, adding a touch of spirituality that enriches the experience of those who visit this sacred place.
The church, initially conceived as a convent of the Conventual Franciscan Friars in the seventeenth century by the writer Antonio Caferri, has a late Romanesque structure with porticoes on the facade and on the west side, and a characteristic sail-shaped bell tower. Although its original purpose was never realized, the Church of St. Francis has become a symbol of history and devotion.
